Data Sources & Methodology

Indirect Cost Calculation Methodology

Indirect costs are calculated using a sliding scale model from a Stanford University study. This model applies a ratio based on the direct cost of an incident.

  • $0 - $2,999 Direct Cost: Ratio of 4.5
  • $3,000 - $4,999 Direct Cost: Ratio of 1.6
  • $5,000 - $9,999 Direct Cost: Ratio of 1.2
  • $10,000+ Direct Cost: Ratio of 1.1

Data Sources for National Averages

The national average direct costs are synthesized from recent data from primary federal agencies to provide relevant benchmarks.

  • Average Injury Cost: Based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data for DART cases, factoring in medical and indemnity costs.
  • MHE / Forklift Incident Cost: Based on BLS data (CFOI & SOII) for serious incidents.
  • Commercial Vehicle Accident Costs: Based on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) data.
